CHAPTER CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH EVENTS

Member Articles

2018 was a great year for the PMI Honolulu, Hawaii Chapter, which celebrated its 20th anniversary with several big events. In March, the chapter hosted the 2018 PMI Region 7 Summit, welcoming 150 chapter leaders from California, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona and Hawaii. On 20 June, we kicked off our year-long birthday celebration with a dinner meeting. Logo items were released each month, with funding supplemented by a special program of four-hour training events focused on those needing professional development units (PDUs) to maintain their certifications.

In June, we also launched a 20th anniversary video of the “Early Years,” made by long-time chapter volunteer Ed Tsang, PMP. The video portrayed the chapter’s history from the perspectives of our founding members Norm Kawachika; Larry Rowland, EdD, PMP; Roy Uemura PMP; and Carolyn Yoshihara, PMP.  On 19 October, the chapter held its largest event of the year, the Professional Development Day (PDD). This event was led by Special Projects Director Gaby Ewachiw, PMP. The theme of the event was “A‘ohe Hana Nui Ke Alu ‘Ia,” Hawaiian for “No task is too big when done together.”

The opening keynote was Ramsay Taum. Mr. Taum spoke about the culture of Hawaii and how the project management arena fits right into the sustainability of the culture. Our special guest speaker was Jim Snyder, PMI Fellow, a founder of PMI. The event closed out with a networking activity that included a personality assessment. Finally, our closing keynote speaker, Raji Sivaraman, PMI-ACP, PMP, drew analogies between music and project management from her book Making Projects Sing. She closed by singing a Hawaiian song and led all the participants to our “pau hana” (after work) party. We look forward to our next 20 years growing as a chapter and promoting the project management profession across Hawaii!
