PMI Education Foundation (PMIEF)

PMI is the world's leading not-for-profit membership association for the project management profession, with more than half a million members and credential holders in 185 countries. Our worldwide advocacy for project management is supported by our globally-recognized standards and credentials, our extensive research program, and our professional development opportunities.

The Honolulu Chapter was established in 1997 with 25 members and our chapter received our Chapter Charter certificate on 5 June 1998.  We have grown to over 800+ members in 2020.  

We've changed our organization name to PMI Hawaii Chapter to clearly represent the entire State of Hawaii, not just Honolulu.

As with many organizations, our membership dipped in response to the COVID epidemic, but we've already recovered to regain membership to over 770 in 2023.

kerstan-wong.png Project Management for Not-For-Profit Organizations

In the year 2000, Kerstan Wong, PMP, HECO, spearheaded an effort to develop a class for Not-For-Profit organizations (NFPs). The one-day course was intended to introduce project management principles to help NFPs make optimal use of their always-too-scarce resources. Kerstan writes,

The "inspiration" for this training occurred when I was in charge of a fundraising banquet for the University of Hawaii Football program in 1998.  Based on what I learned through my project management training, I was able to organize and put together the banquet with our banquet committee.  The Executive Director at the time was so impressed with how organized the event planned and executed given that it was my first time doing it.  That's when it dawned on me that Non-Profit organizations could use PM training as most of their endeavors are indeed projects.
 
Gailene Wong of the Weinberg Foundation was really the person that expanded our visibility in promoting our program.  During the first year of the program in 2001, she was an attendee at one of our first classes.  She thought that the training would be very beneficial to the organizations that Weinberg worked with.  Thus, she approached me to partner with PMI on expanding the reach of this training.

Since 2001, this class has been taught by PMI Honolulu Chapter volunteers to hundreds of attendees from dozens of NFPs across the State of Hawaii including:
